Two of the best lightweight fighters in the world battled for 3 rounds in the main event of UFC 242 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Lafayette native Dustin Poirier battled Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was coming off a 9 month suspension, for the the undisputed lightweight championship.

In the end, Khabib was too much for Poirier, who submitted to a rear choke hold in the 3rd round.

Poirier entered the matchup as the interim champion, with the ultimate goal of leaving Abu Dhabi as the undisputed champ, but came up short.

"I feel like I left myself down," Poirier said after the fight. "My career was set up for this moment. I was so prepared, I didn't cut any corners. When I wake up I need to take a look in the mirror; I need some time to learn from this. If this has taught me anything, it's to be thankful and gracious. I'm sorry if I let anyone down."

Poirier landed a pair of big right hands in the 2nd round, and then briefly got Khabib in a tight guillotine in the 3rd round, before he slipped out, got Poirier on his back, and made him tap to the choke hold.

Khabib (28-0) remains undefeated, while Poirier falls to 25-6.
