Running back Elijah McGuire, the former Louisiana Ragin' Cajun and Sun Belt player of the year was released by the New York Jets today, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

McGuire, who was drafted in the 6th round by New York in 2017, was the odd man out in a three man battle between he, Bilal Powell, and Trenton Cannon to get the last RB spot after training camp.

From 2013 to 2016, McGuire was electric for the Ragin' Cajuns, racking up 4,301 and 42 touchdowns rushing, along with 1,394 yards and 10 touchdowns receiving.

Many fans feel his name will be added to the wall at Cajun Field of players whose jerseys have been retired, a list that includes Louisiana greats Jake Delhomme, Tyrell Fenroy, Glenn LaFleur, Damon Mason, Brian Mitchell, Brandon Stokley, Charles Tillman, and Orlando Thomas.

McGuire started 3 games last season in New York, after beginning the year on injured reserve.

He appeared in 16 games in 2 seasons with the Jets, accumulating 591 yards and 4 touchdowns rushing, along with 370 yards and 2 touchdowns receiving.

At 25, McGuire remains a promising young talent. Hopefully, he receives an opportunity to catch on with another team.
