The New Orleans Saints made a trade on Sunday as they acquired linebacker Kiko Alonso from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for linebacker Vince Biegel.

This latest trade continues a recent purge by the Dolphins of some veteran players.

Just yesterday they traded left tackle Laremy Tunsil and Kenny Stills to the Houston Texans.

The 29-year-old Alonso should bring some veteran depth to an already talented linebacking corps for the Saints.

Alonso burst onto the scene in 2013 as he was named the Pro Football Writers of America defensive rookie of the year.

However, this now marks the third time he has been traded in his career.

Still, Alonso led Miami in tackles in two of his three seasons there. He had 125 tackles and three interceptions last year.

Biegel, 26, was primarily a special teams player for the Saints in 2018 and with the Green Bay Packers in 2017. He was a fourth round pick back in 2017 for the Packers out of Wisconsin, but was released by them in his second season.

It's unclear how the Saints will utilize Alonso. The team will start Demario Davis, Alex Anzalone and A.J. Klein.

Both Anzalone and top backup Craig Robertson, however, have been dealing with unspecified injuries this summer, so this move gives the Saints some options.

The 2019 regular season kicks off for New Orleans at home on Monday, September 9th as they take on the Houston Texans. Kickoff is set for 6:10 pm and you can hear all the play-by-play action in Lafayette on 97.3 The Dawg and ESPN 1420.
