For the first time in the Sean Payton/Drew Brees era, the New Orleans Saints drafted a quarterback before round 7.

Colorado State's Garrett Grayson was selected at 75th overall by the Saints with the first of their 2 third round picks.

Grayson is the highest drafted quarterback for the Saints since selecting Archie Manning at number 2 overall in 1971.

The 43 year time span between drafting a QB in the first three rounds is the longest span for any team in the history of the common draft.

Will the 6'2, 213 pound Mountain West Player of the Year be groomed to be Saints quarterback Drew Brees' successor? Time will tell, but drafting a QB this high is a telling sign from a franchise that never does it.

The full-time starter for the Rams the last two seasons, Grayson started 35 games at Colorado State, passing for 4,006 yards and 32 touchdowns as a senior last year.

Grayson has a strong arm, showing off a deep ball and pinpoint accuracy last year. However, his release isn't quick and he's not a threat to hurt defenses with his feet.

Grayson will likely compete with Ryan Griffin and Luke McCown for the second string spot on the QB depth chart next season.

While Grayson may replace Brees one day, it won't be in 2015.

Here's a deeper look at Grayson as he draws up his favorite play for Jon Gruden.
