Will former Louisiana Ragin' Cajun basketball star Elfrid Payton be a member of the Phoenix Suns next season?

Payton, who was acquired by the Suns from the Orlando Magic at the trade deadline, has gotten off to a nice start in Phoenix, but Scott Bordow of the Arizona Republic, says the future of the point guard in the desert is still very much in doubt.

In two games with the Suns, Payton has scored 48 points, including 29 against the Golden St. Warriors on Monday night, while pulling down 14 rebounds, and dishing out 14 assists.

A restricted free agent at the end of the year, the Suns could free up $10 million of cap space by renouncing his rights.

Of course, if Payton continues to play the way he has over his first two games in Phoenix, they'll most certainly retain him

A two-time first-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection, Payton averaged 14.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.9 assists over his three-year college career at UL from the 2011-2014 season-the 2013-2014 campaign.

A native of Gretna, Louisiana, Payton was selected by the Magic with the 10th-overall pick of the 2014 NBA Draft.

The 23-year old Payton is averaging 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 6.3 assists-per-game this season, his fourth in the league.
