Report: Pelicans Agree To Contract Extension With Coach Alvin Gentry

New Orleans Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry has agreed to a two-year extension with the team, according to ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

Before their first round playoff series with the Portland Trail Blazers last month, New Orleans GM Dell Demps exercised the team option in Gentry's contract for next season. With today's extension, Gentry's deal with the club now runs through the 2020-2021 season.

Per Wojnarowski, citing sources, Gentry gets a raise next season, with a guaranteed deal the following season, and the final year of his current deal will be based on performance.

Gentry, 63, became the 6th head coach in franchise history three years ago following the firing of Monty Williams.

In his first two seasons, the team dealt with an array of injuries, stumbling to losing records.

This past season, he led the team to the playoffs with a 48-34 record, and a first round sweep of Portland.

The Pelicans offseason is shrouded in questions about DeMarcus "Boogie" Cousins. The All-Star center is a free agent, but ruptured his Achilles on January 26th in a win over the Rockets. New Orleans wants to re-sign him.

In addition, the Pelicans would like to re-sign veteran point guard Rajon Rondo, who was a key cog in the team's success last regular season, and especially the playoffs.
